This temple was built by the eleventh Oouchi clan of provincial military governor turned Daimyo in the Muromachi era, Morihara Oouchi. (Construction was completed in approx. 1442) It is listed as one of the 3 most beautiful Japanese pagoda with its wooden structure and cypress bark roof, and it also shows different beauty throughout all four seasons with snowing, plum-flower, cherry blossom and tinted autumnal leaves. The Temple and pagoda lights up until 10pm all year round.

The memorial church was built in 1952 to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of St. Francis Xavier’s visit to Yamaguchi. After the original church was destroyed by fire, the current memorial church was built in 1998. It is loved by local people with neighboring Kameyama park and the 2 white steeples are known as landmarks of Yamaguchi.

As the state guesthouse of Yamaguchi from Meiji through Heisei era, the restaurant Gion Saikou tei was visited by internationally famous guests. Saikou tei is the relocated and rebuilt facility of Gion Saikou tei. The framed autograph of Hirofumi Ito, Kaoru Inoue and others are displayed in a hall, you can feel history in atmosphere.

(Joei temple, Sesshu garden) This garden is believed to be made by Sesshu following an order by the 14th head of Oouchi, Masahiro after reforming the villa of Oouchi into temple. The round style garden using Japanese folk garden style is especially stunning when it snows. The beautiful black and white view will be there just like painted in Japanese Suiboku-art.

Akiyoshidou is the one of the greatest limestone caves nation-wide, which is created under the biggest karst plateau of Japan. It allows visitors to meet wonderful natural structures such as Hyakumai sara(hundred plates) and Ougon hashira(gold pillar). As the temperature inside the cave is kept at 17 degrees throughout year, visitor can enjoy the cool environment during summer time and warmth in winter.

This bridge connects Tsunashima which is located north-west of the Yamaguchi main land, is considered as one of the 5 longest bridges that are free of charge for passing. The view of the bridge connecting to the beautiful ocean has obtained tile of “the greatest view of Japan” as well. Also, this area is a rich fishing location, so visiting gourmet spots will be a joyful activity for tourists.

The mysterious view of 123 toriis (a guard frame, painted in red color) standing from precipice to shore has been listed in Japan’s 31 most beautiful places by CNN. The offertory box on top of the major torii is also well known. The rocky spot in front is called “Sprouting of the dragon palace” and mist-like sea water is vigorously sprouted there like the sea rages.

The wooden structured bridge is listed in Japan’s top 3 famous bridges and its beautiful 5 arches are the symbolic presence of Iwakuni-city. Cherry blossoms of spring and cormorant fishing in the torch lights of Summer are specially recommended. In the castle town nearby, there are restaurant and shops where visitors can taste famous Iwakuni-sushi.
